Phuket Sino-Portuguese Style
Phuket unique architecture is a mixture of the Chinese and European style.Phuket unique architecture, Sino-Portuguese Style or Colonial Style is combination between Chinese and Portuguese architecture. These kinds of houses were constructed in western style but the decoration inside the houses was Chinese. Originally, the Sino-Portuguese house owners were Chinese that emigrated from Penang. At the time, building such a house was expansive and sometimes materials had to be ordered from other counties, such as England and Italy, so most of the houses were occupied by traders who usually traveled to Penang, because the business relationship between Phuket and Penang was very good and the Phuket way of life and culture were similar to Penang. One manifest sample is the Sino-Portuguese houses on Thalang (the road of culture), PhangNga, Yoawarath, Krabi and Dibuk road. There are 2 types of Sino-Portuguese houses, Aung Mor Lao and 2 story row houses. In front of every roe house, there is a connected cloister called ” Ngor Ka Kei “.
Sino-Portuguese architecture is a mixture of the Chinese and European style. Sino refer to the Chinese aspects of the buildings while Portuguese refer to Portugal, the first European nation to arrive in Phuket and gave architectural influence to the province, in addition, to Penang, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia before the advent of other European influence. Sino-Portuguese architecture had gained the highest popularity from the region of King Rama V through towards the end of King Rama VI’s region (1868-1925 A.D). The period was the peak of the region’s tin mine evolution as well as economic growth. Most have the prosperous and successfully miners at that time were Chinese immigrants. A number of Sino-Portuguese buildings still remain to be seen on PhangNga, Yoawarath, Dibuk, and Krabi Road.
In this restricted zone, no building over 12meter high is allowed. Old buildings are promoted by preservation of front pathway and Sino-Portuguese style.
